| Frances Memorial Children’s Home’s Dormitory Construction Project - Liberia, Africa ... |
We are very excited to be working with Mary Jackson, U.S. Representative for the Elwuo Orphanage Group. This project for the Children’s Home Dormitory will be constructed in Tapeta, Nimba County, about 250 miles north of Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia.
The intent of the FMA Development Plan is to provide boarding for up to two hundred students. Elementary and middle school children will attend an existing school (built by Jesuit Refugee Services in 2006 – accommodating up to 300 students). High school kids will attend Tapeta Memorial High School or the Catholic High School until FMA grows to the high school level. A specific fund raising campaign has begun from which all proceeds will finance a move to the high school level. This will also provide seed money for a launch of a vocational program for these very students. Dormitory construction is a vital part of this effort and is considered top priority at this time.
The vocational program is vitally important for children in the orphanage and others within the community. Unfortunately, donor funded programs around lower Nimba are located in other cities at least 70 miles away. Because of the high cost of travel, rent, tuition, materials, and other miscellaneous expenses, these trainings are closed to most students out of the Tapeta area. This FMA Vocational Program will provide a variety of other on-going programs within the community. We plan on reaching many more students as these programs grow and prove successful in years to come. This will be free of charge, encouraging more students to participate.
The vocational programs are as follows: Agriculture, Home Economics, Building Construction, Auto Mechanics, Pottery, Batik & Arts, and Office Skill Training. “As experts have said, training and economic empowerment is a major key to putting young people beyond the influence of any potential future warlords who would want to enlist them by holding out hopes of financial gain.” Mary Jackson
The SKIDS Foundation is focused on producing the funding for the Elwuo Orphanage. It is estimated that about $232,000 would be needed to meet the needs of both orphanages and schools. (This includes complete dorm construction costs at both locations.)
The SKIDS Foundation believes that children are innocent, and that every child deserves true opportunity to succeed. We feel children around the world deserve your attention; especially children in need. If you’re not part of the solution… what are you? |
